Murren in the Bernese Oberland is as pretty as any ski resort, and is the place where Sir Arnold Lunn formalised what we know today as downhill skiing. My parents (Derek & Diana) honeymooned here in 1960 and this video shows the resort in all its glory on an emotional visit by my mother and I in 2008. We also see the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant at the top of the Schilthorn, which was featured in the 1969 James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ and cross the Lauterbrunnen Valley for a brief glimpse of Wengen, home of the classic Lauberhorn ski races. My parents loved this car-free haven of beauty so much they named their house ‘Kandahar’ after the founding of the Kandahar Ski Club there in 1924. (January 2008)

Ever dream of going downhill all day on really fun barely ridden trails? Switzerland is just as you’d imagine but probably even better; lifts and trains and roads into the mountains, little towns perched on high peaks, grassy slopes….and 60000 miles of singletrack. Join Big Mountain Bike Adventures and guides Joe Schwartz and Wade Simmons on this great DH adventure. Go to www.ridebig.com.
